Check as follows:
- Check the restriction gauge.
- If the gauge show restriction, go to step 3 .
- If the reading is ok, go to the next step.
- Install a dyno and check air line restriction with a manometer.
- If air line restriction is high, find the source of air inlet blockage.
- If air line restriction is fine, go to the next step.
- Remove the air filter element; refer to OEM guidelines.
- Attempt to start and run the engine.
ENGINE EXHAUST To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area. Engine exhaust is toxic. - If the engine starts and runs, no further troubleshooting is required. Shut down the engine.
- If the engine fails to start and run, go to the next step.
- Replace the air filter.
- Visually inspect the air filter for clogging and replace as necessary; refer to OEM guidelines.
- Visually inspect gaskets for deterioration and replace as necessary; refer to OEM guidelines.
- Visually inspect air inlets for restrictions and clean as necessary; refer to OEM guidelines.
- To determine if the replaced air filter resolved starting difficulty.
- Attempt to start and run the engine. If the engine starts and runs, no further troubleshooting is required. Shut down the engine.
- If the engine fails to start and run, check compression; refer to “3.6 Low Compression” .
